FemtoLasik laser

"It’s funny because when they turn on the laser you see some blurry red lights, then it starts to flicker, you don’t feel anything, and when it’s finished you can see the same lights perfectly. The magic came the following morning when I woke up in bed and saw everything incredibly clearly."

With what visual problem do you arrive at Oftalvist?

With 4.5 diopters in myopia in each eye, and 0.5-0.75 in astigmatism. In addition, due to continued use of contact lenses since I was 14 years old, I couldn't stand them anymore. Which means that she had to go with the glasses everywhere.

What prevents you from performing your ocular pathology in your day to day and how does it affect you?

I am a computer engineer, a job where eyesight is essential. Being in front of a screen for so many hours made it impossible for me to use the contact lenses since my eyes were very dry.

What do they ask you at the Oftalvist center where you go to improve your visual health?

The truth is that I had always been convinced that when I was 30 I would have an eye surgery to forget about the glasses that I had been wearing since I was 8 years old. When I arrived they told me that my case was very easy, that there would be no problems. They did a lot of tests and the specialist recommended the FemtoLasik technique since, due to the characteristics of my eyes, they were the ideal candidates for this type of surgery.

In the case of considering surgery, could you describe what it consists of?

In my case, what they explained to me, and it happened, is that one day I would go to the operating room, they would sedate my eyes with anesthetic eye drops, they would make a small cut in the cornea to raise a small layer (Flap) with femtosecond technology and then with another laser they would file down the curvature of my cornea that caused myopia in my eyes. They would put the flap back on top to protect the area that had been laser burned and I could walk out the door. With some antibiotic eye drops and the promise not to touch my eyes.

How is the experience in the operating room?

The truth is that I was very nervous but everything was quite calm. We had a problem with my right eye that would not allow the "device" to be attached to the eyeball to raise the flap, but in the end everything was perfect. Also, it's funny because when they put the laser in front of you you see blurry red lights, it starts to blink, you don't feel anything and when it ends you see the red lights perfectly defined. I knew at that point that everything had gone well, then they put a bunch of artificial tears on you and put the flap back on. When you place it you stop seeing and I was scared but then I understood that it was normal because it protects the area and once it is sealed you can see completely.

And the postoperative period?

At first I came out seeing something blurry and with very dark glasses because the light bothers me. I spent the rest of the day at home resting and shedding tears at the times the doctor told me. The magic was the next morning when I woke up in bed and saw all the objects with incredible clarity. The light still bothered me but I could already see well. I had surgery on a Thursday and went back to work on Tuesday and was back driving within a week of surgery.

Do you follow any medical indications after surgery?

The first months I protected my eyes a lot, as well as with artificial tears during the first months. I have also repainted my eyes without problems, since I used hypoallergenic products for the contact lenses.

Finally, what can you do now, that you couldn't do before, in your routine life?

Falling asleep watching a movie that I like without worrying about whether I will nail my glasses, bathing at the beach or pool without fear of losing myself because I do not recognize the faces around me. Open your eyes and look at the alarm clock without having to fumble for your glasses. Watch a 3D movie without having two glasses on your face. Reading the posters from a distance, recognizing my people from a distance, traveling without worrying about getting lens fluid in a size that can travel on the plane, preparing the spare lenses, watching the glasses and many other things!
