ICL Lenses

"The first results showed 0 dioptres in the right eye and 0.25 in the left eye, a huge success considering the high number of dioptres I had before. Now I am 100% independent, not to mention I see much better now than I did with my glasses or contact lenses. I wonder if people without myopia have always seen like this."

When do you notice that your eyes begin to suffer from a visual health problem?

I had 11 diopters in my right eye and 10 in my left, which did not prevent me from living normally, but it did limit me in many aspects.

Myopia was detected when I was 9 years old, at first it was very little but it did not stop growing during the following years. I could perceive the light but everything else was like a big cloud, I couldn't read without glasses, I couldn't go down the stairs without them, I couldn't read the name of the stop from the subway car either, and if I fell asleep and someone moved a millimeter my glasses from the place where I had left them, I was unable to find them. Thus, I began to wear contact lenses until my eyes began to reject them. I had conjunctivitis every two by three, so I could only use them 6 hours a day.

When did it mainly affect you?

I noticed it especially when I went to the pool or the beach because I bathed without glasses for fear of losing my contact lenses. My boyfriend used to hold my hand because he couldn't see the stones when he entered the shore and he tripped me. In addition, not having an exact glimpse of the size of the big waves, I was afraid of swimming in the sea. I understood that surgery was a necessity.

They operate on you with a phakic intraocular lens. Do they offer you those only alternatives or do they offer you other options?

Before having surgery I read a lot on the subject and I knew that my only option was the intraocular lens, since being highly myopic, the laser had no place. What they did give me a choice was between various types of lenses and I chose the one that best suited my needs.

As a patient, how do you experience the intervention?

In my case I had two interventions, one for the right eye and two weeks later another for the left. I was very calm until the moment I had to put on the robe without glasses. The nurse came to get me and I started to get nervous.

The operation only lasted 15 minutes. During the course of the operation I saw some lights at all times that I could not stop looking at by order of the doctor. It didn't hurt at all and I went out walking and seeing, they just put anesthesia in my eye. The second operation was less nervous but it hurt more, although they told me it was normal. When I finished I walked out without getting dizzy. I felt good at all times.

How is the postoperative period?

The postoperative period of the right eye was longer than that of the left. A few hours after leaving the operating room, a cloud appeared in my eye, I saw it as cloudy. Two days passed and the cloud disappeared. With the left one, however, I did not have that feeling of swelling after the operation. In the first results I gave 0 diopters on the right and 0.25 on the left, a great achievement for the large number of diopters it had.

I was taking three different types of eye drops three times a day. They recommended that I lead a normal life without making great efforts and bend down without looking down, always looking forward. The hardest part for me were those three months in which I had to remember the eye drops, especially at the beginning, since they stung a bit.

Do you follow any particular medical indication after surgery?

In principle I do not have any prescription. I only shed a tear before going to bed because sometimes I wake up with a slightly dry eye, but I already suffered from that before the operation. I barely had tears from a very prolonged use of contact lenses.

What differences do you notice compared to before?

What can I do about everything? Now I have the freedom to come and go whenever I want without having to carry liquid from contact lenses or glasses in case something happens to me. I don't have to look at the clock to see if the required 6 hours have passed and run to remove my contact lenses. I can dive and see or swim without bumping into people without help from anyone. Now I am 100 percent independent, not to mention that I see much better than with contact lenses and a thousand times better than with glasses. The objects have more light and a brightness that I did not remember. I wonder if people who are not nearsighted have always seen like this.
